Rediscovering China Spring’s Past
Settlement in the China Spring area began around 1860, and the town was officially founded in 1867. The unique name, China Spring, comes from a spring within a grove of chinaberry trees. By the early 1880s, the town had flourished. It featured five steam cotton gins, gristmills, three general stores, a Methodist church, and around 200 residents. Principal shipments included cotton, corn, and wool.
In the late 1920s, China Spring became a hub for a rural high school district. In 1963, it merged with Bosqueville to form the China Spring-Bosqueville Independent School District. China Spring regained independent status two years later. By the mid-1970s, the community had two churches, a school, and numerous houses. The community continued to grow into what it is today.
